Dear Lord I Pray For:
Wisdom, to understand my man;
Love, to forgive him; and
Patience, for the messes he makes.
Because Lord, if I pray for Strength,
I’ll beat him to death.
Every summer my husband takes a week-long camping/hiking/fishing vacation in Canada…Quetico Park, to be exact. I’m not into the camping myself, so it doesn’t bother me in the least that he takes the time to do this. He loves it, the peace and quiet he finds as he floats along one of the many glistening lakes as he fishes for hours on end. There’s nothing but the sights and sounds of nature all around him. No desk full of paperwork, data to be analyzed on his computer, and most of all…no hour long commute to work in the morning. I’m happy for him that he can do this.
On the other hand, the week before he leaves on this trip is enough to drive me insane. It’s time to gather the camping equipment and go through the checklist of things he will need to survive in the wilderness. The guys carry their packs which include cooking equipment, tents, a minimal amount of clothes and rain gear, and most important of all…the bottle of Canadian Whiskey that they portion out every evening after they’ve finished their evening meal of fish and….whatever else they eat with the fish. The Outfitter who supplies some of their equipment such as the tents, cooking equipment and canoes, also supply freeze dried meals in case their catch of the day isn’t so hot. However, through the years, the guys have become creative with their meals and bring along some of their own **camp recipes.
Every year, my husband makes a recipe called “Hudson Bay Bread” which is a sort of energy bar that is really delicious and chock full of good things like oatmeal, dried cranberry’s, sunflower seeds, honey, and other ingredients. This recipe has been changed and perfected throughout the years to accommodate those who can’t eat certain ingredients (like peanuts) or to add to the flavor of the “bread”. The problem is, whenever my husband makes this recipe, my kitchen looks as if it’s been hit by a grenade. You would think he would have this down to a science…and being a scientist who keeps his lab organized and clean, you wouldn’t think that he could do so much damage in so little time.
Last year, for instance, he used the wrong pans to bake it in. You see, as this is baking, it rises and if it’s not in a pan that has a high enough lid, it will overflow….and overflow it did! The first batch he made and put in the top oven. I warned him that this is not a good idea. He swore up and down that this is the oven he always uses. I told him no…it’s not. You have to use the bottom, bigger oven or it will burn.
It burned…and because it was in the wrong pan, it not only burned on top, but it overflowed in massive amounts and smoke was pouring out of my oven and filling the kitchen like a volcano spewing soot and debris. He then turned that oven off and transferred the mess to the oven below. I told him to put another pan under it because it’s going to continue over-flowing. He said that would keep it from baking evenly. It over-flowed, and again…more smoke came billowing out of the oven. He scrapped that batch and said he would make another one….oh goody.
Of course, he couldn’t put the new batch in the oven until I cleaned out the mess he made in the two ovens he just destroyed. He finally decided to heed my advice and use different pans and use the bottom oven only. He wrapped up the bread in individual slices and I was left to clean up the rest of the mess in my kitchen.
Tonight my husband will be making his Hudson Bay Bread….Lord, give me strength.
