THE END IS NEAR…AGAIN

Ok….I’ve seen more than enough end of days stuff on TV and the Internet, most of it concerning the movie “2012″. Personally, I don’t understand what it is about disaster movies that get so much play. My gosh, all you have to do is turn on the TV and flick through the guide and there is one disaster after another (including Jon and Kate). Just in the last week, I’ve seen documentaries about 2012, Nostradamus, sci-fi movies about giant ice twisters, and meteors slamming into the earth. What ever happened to the good ol’ days when we were attacked by giant bugs, giant gorilla’s , or Godzilla? Now it’s all about weather, space debris, earthquakes and volcanoes. It sounds like the movie, “2012″ brings them altogether at the same time.
Now, many people will say that it’s no big deal, it’s just a movie, but ya know what? There are people out there who take this stuff seriously. Remember the Y2K scare a few years back? I saw people at Sam’s Club stocking up on bottled water, generators, and canned food. I’ll bet they’re still eating that canned spam they bought. Of course, those are the idiots who watched this garbage….
Yup…all is hopeless. No lights, no electricity, planes are going to collide in mid-air…not just because the pilots are on their laptops or drunk, either. It’s the end of the world. Of course, there is the obligatory picture of the religious icons being destroyed, just like the movie “2012″.
Of course, there is the element of people who think that they can escape the end of the world…they are the survivalists. Be afraid! Be very afraid…but be prepared. They’re kind of like boy scouts on steroids. Run to the store! Get your water! Buy cases of spam and Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup! Get your guns and ammo ready!!!
So what happens when a humongous meteorite lands on those guys in the mountains that are camping out, eating squirrels, blogging, and cleaning and polishing their guns?
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve met with a few Catholic survivalists out there, too. I guess the whole gospel thing about no one knowing the day or the hour didn’t sink in because they’re ready for that “Three Days of Darkness” they keep trying to sell to anyone who will listen. The Church doesn’t condone this stuff as far as I know, but it doesn’t seem to detour those who believe in it. They may not have cases of spam and water stocked up in their basement, but their homes are filled with blessed candles. According to this crowd, “Three-quarters of the human race will be exterminated, – more men than women.” Hmmm….that might not be so bad.
And there are also the “Left Behind” crowd.
It seems that all the Catholics are going to be left behind because we’re the “Whores of Babylon”. Man, if I had a nickle for every time someone yelled that to me when I changed lanes without using my signal.
Ok, what I’m getting at in this post is this….if ya wanna spend your weekend going to movies or watching documentaries on TV about how we’re all gonna die, most likely in 2012, don’t waste your time. There are worst ways to go, and it could happen this Thanksgiving. Just keep telling yourself, “There’s no such thing as an evil turkey…There’s no such thing as an evil turkey”. (Following video has some nasty language….just so ya know).

Science has proven to a large part of mankind that it is the brain that matters and not the heart, that ancient belief in ceremony is simply ignorance. Yet what has been created with this great science? We stand on a world at the brink of a destruction caused by human greed less than 200 years after the beginning of the ’scientific age’. Ancient man, silly ceremonies and all, lived on this planet for many thousands of years in harmony with nature.
I think what we’re seeing with all the hysteria that’s bound to worsen is the result of our unconscious understanding of our loss of connection to the sacred nature of our world.
Perhaps instead of physical destruction we may be, as the Mayans and many other indigenous tribal elders say, at the beginning of a new way of living in the world and in our universe. I’m going outside to light a candle.

Right on, Nunly! And I am professed to live waiting in joyful hope for the coming of the Lord…when HE chooses! Not when I think He will.
Susan brings up an interesting point; I would call it the “return of the repressed”, a favorite theme of one of my favorite journalists and authors.
What this means (and I’m not sure that Susan means it, but her comment triggered my comment) is that folks are so busy trying to repress the real evil they either do or permit that they project “doomsday” scenarios in order to express this.
How many unborn children have been killed through abortion? How many children and young people have been horribly abused, sexually, physically and emotionally by the screwed up people who only care about themselves? How many wars, genocides, corrupt governments that torture and imprison innocent people? How has greed, selfishness and just general insensitivity to the needs of those around us has hardened our hearts and made us just sick on every level? And what about the general nastiness within ourselves that makes us think we are better than others or presume to make judgments about them when we do not even know what their circumstances are?
That is what this “end times” stuff in movies and popular culture, in my humble estimation, is all about. People are afraid and feel guilty and have to have some way to express in a cathartic manner, if you will, these overwhelming emotions.
Yeah, a meteor could strike tomorrow; a nuclear war could begin; a horrible plague could be the killer of thousands, if not millions. And I could get hit by a car crossing the road to mail some letters, the brakes could go out on the van as I toodled into town, I could get electrocuted making toast…
What matters is how I am living right now, in this moment. Fr. Groeschel has said that all of us are going to meet the end times…we’re all gonna die someday. And THAT’S what should make us mindful of how well we are living in the “sacrament of the present moment”.

Just as aside: acc’d to the movie trailer for “2012″ I get to celebrate my birthday (December 21) AND get annihilated all at once! Kudos for me:<)!!
It's the longest day of the year and I'm sure has some connection with the Mayan calendar.

Susan- I never real thought of comparing the scientific age and the age of the ancient society and what has happened to our world since. Thanks for pointing that out. I always think of the song,
‘Tis the gift to be simple,
’tis the gift to be free,
’tis the gift to come down
where we ought to be,
and when we find ourselves in the place just right,
’twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gained
to bow and to bend we shan’t be ashamed,
to turn, turn, will be our delight
till by turning, turning we come round right.
Maybe the Amish have it right…no electricity, phones, cars, living on what you grow in the fields, etc.
Nazareth Priest- Exactly, you nailed it! I feel the same way, why worry about predictions of “the end” when your end could come any time? I had a brother who walked out the door to go to school when he was only a month from his 16th birthday and never came home…sudden death from a heart defect that my parents didn’t even know he had. But he was ready for that day. He was so close to God, often attended daily Mass. In fact, he had gone to Mass that morning before school started and he passed away a few hours later. He was the type of guy who always stood up for the underdog, always showed acts of kindness and respect to those who he came in contact. That’s the way we should all live our lives, IMO. He was such a positive influence on me and the way I try (but don’t always succeed) to live my life.
I guess you better party big time this year…just in case, eh?
I think you should have a big blast of a party in 2012…a cake decorated like a meteorite with sparklers on it, crash helmets for party hats, and maybe party favors of bottled water and canned Spam! Ok…skip the Spam….that’s really gross.

My otherwise sensible & impressionable daughter fell prey to the 2012 fear machine. I explained to her this is what her church warns about in terms of the occult ( We are Catholic )
I asked her a simple question…..Is the Pope the shepherd or not?

Of course you all are Whores of Babylon. Just look at your naughty Catholic school girl outfits.
Hey, if the Cavs win the title, I say to Quetzalcoatl, do your worst!

Randal- LOL! Only you can make that connection.
Any news on whether Shaq will play tonight?

Kind of reminds me of the days of “Towering Inferno” and “The Poseidon Adventure” another “bad economy” time. I can’t listen to the radio for 5 minutes w/out someone, a commercial or commentator telling me how tough these times are. But as far as disaster films go, I like watching the aforementioned with my kids on DVD once and awhile, and unlike most of the oldies, they’ll enjoy them with me.

well I’m with the “aliens are gonna come and eat us in soup” crowd when it comes to end times meself.
eh, falls under the “who knows, who cares, why bother?” heading.
