GOTTA LOVE THIS…

LiveLeak.com – SNL Parody of Obama & Jintao Press Conference in Beijing

I’m sure the Obama was loving all the positive attention he was getting during the campaign. And there’s no doubt he was really loving the negative attention McCain and Palin were getting (especially Palin)…but something tells me he’s not watching SNL all that much anymore.

GOTTA HATE THIS….

Read this post at Uppity Woman’s place. Looks like Senator Reid was busy sticking it to women this weekend. Uppity notes: “He cut Senator Barbara Mikulski’s Amendment #201 OUT of the health bill. It would make basic women’s health care (like prenatal care, cancer screenings, etc.) part of all basic insurance plans.” Yup….first it was the mammograms, then the pap smears for cervical cancer for women….and now this. Does that tell you something, ladies?    I would fully have expected  Reid to take all us women out to dinner and a movie because… “I THINK IT’S THE POLITE THING TO DO BEFORE DOING SEX TO ME!”

ON A PERSONAL NOTE….

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY GRANDDAUGHTER, ELIZABETH–THE COOLEST 10 YEAR OLD IN TOWN!

UPDATE: I just got a glimpse of the cake my daughter made for my granddaughter this year. Every year since her first birthday, my daughter has made some incredible cakes. Whatever my granddaughter asks for, my daughter will figure out a way to make it. This year, Elizabeth is into dragons. Specifically the type from the Inheritance book series. ..the dragon, Eldest, is her favorite. These pics are from her blackberry which was sent to her Facebook pages, so the quality isn’t the greatest, but it still looks pretty good to me.

I’ll see if I can come up with some better pics when I go to her party this afternoon.

In the meantime…have a great Sunday!

SHOPPING FOR THANKSGIVING

Posted in Uncategorized on November 21, 2009 by Nunly

Oh my, it’s that time again…Thanksgiving dinner planning. This weekend I’ll be pouring over my cookbooks looking for a few new recipes for Thanksgiving dinner. Our usual turkey stuffing is an old recipe that I’ve used for years, chestnut. This year, however, so I can get over the doldrums of cooking another huge meal that will leave me exhausted and stuck with cleaning up the huge mess in my kitchen. Without exaggeration, it takes me two days to get everything back in order again, such as putting away the china and crystal, scrubbing the floor that is full of all the gravy and food that gets dropped while carrying the dishes from the dining room to the kitchen, washing the stains out of the tablecloth…you know the drill.

Anyway, other than ordering the fresh turkey, I haven’t done a lick of shopping. I found out yesterday that there is a shortage of canned pumpkin for pumpkin pie. Great. I’m sure now that this has been announced there will be people hording all they can until they have enough canned pumpkin to make 50 pies.

Sadly enough, I won’t be seeing two of my kids and two of my grandchildren because they just can’t do the travel time this year.

Oh…and speaking of travel. If you plan on traveling by plane this holiday season, pay attention to the guidelines. Travelers should know that while pies are permitted through the security checkpoint, cranberries are a big no-no. So, if you plan on stuffing your pockets with cranberry sauce before you fly, you might want to think again.

Another note: Sorry I didn’t make it back to the blog yesterday to answer all your comments. It was a really busy day for me…but a good day.

I’ll be back later when I’m back from the Adoration Chapel.

See ya!

WISH I HAD ONE OF THESE….

(Get your mind out of the gutter…I’m not talking about male appendages.)

I’ll be gone until this afternoon because I have to pick my son up from school for Thanksgiving break. I sure would love to pull up in one of these babies, though. There’s nothing like embarrassing your kids to get back at them for all the grief they’ve given you as they grew up.

See ya all later…

THE DOG ATE MY HOMEWORK

Posted in Uncategorized on November 18, 2009 by Nunly

I just spent the last hour and a half working on a post which I was almost finished with,  just working on the final touches…and it disappeared from the screen. I looked everywhere, my history, the post trash…everywhere. So, I came to the conclusion that either my dog ate it or my computer (which I am convinced is possessed), has destroyed it forever.

Since I have to run out to bring my mother-in-law and mom on some errands, I’ll have to return later to start all over again.

Therefore…thanks to FIDO …..this is an OPEN THREAD. Enjoy your time while Nunly is gone.

Randal, stay out of my stash.

MOM, THIS POST IS FOR YOU–

Posted in U.S. Preventive Service Task Force, Women's Health Issues, breast cancer awareness on November 17, 2009 by Nunly

I  was going to try and avoid a political post this week because I just didn’t want to start my day being pissed off…too late.

Last night, while watching TV I heard a blip on the news about how woman are being told that we don’t need those nasty ol’ mammograms anymore until we are 50 years old…and even then, only once every two years.   My jaw just dropped.  I thought it was some ridiculous rogue group that were shooting their mouth off, but no…it’s our government telling us that.

By now I’m sure most have already heard this news, so I guess I’m just writing this to blow off some steam and write my own views on this subject.

Ok…first let’s look at this government task force that has decided women should be the first in line to be thrown under the health care bus in order to save our government and the health insurance companies the costs of caring for us. According to the Chicago Tribune,  this is  “an influential group” called The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force, a government sponsored group whose work is closely followed by doctors and insurance companies.

Now,  maybe I’ve been living in a cave, but I’ve never even heard of this group before.  Apparently, they consist of four public Health/Preventative Health, two Family Medicine, two Pediatricians, and two Ob/Gyn doctors.   Not one Cancer Surgeon, Oncologist, or Radiologist is in this group…not one.

Oh…and it gets better.  This government task force also recommends that they don’t have “sufficient”  evidence that women over the age of 75 should have mammograms.  Yup…no big deal ladies, once you’re old you can just die and get out of the way.

Women do have some advocates who are fighting for us, though. Dr. Daniel Kopans, senior radiologist in the breast imaging division at Massachusetts General Hospital  said, “This will be disastrous for women’s health.”   Dr. Robert Schmidt, a professor of radiology at the University of Chicago Medical Center said, “It’s arrogant and irresponsible”,  “It’s wrong to keep changing recommendations and give conflicting messages to women.

It doesn’t seem to matter to this task force that deaths from breast cancer has dropped 30% since 1990.  On Uppity Woman’s blog…which has a great post about this story today, I read in her comment section that a comment on an NPR site, written by a mammogram tech said this:

One in every 6 women now gets breast cancer. From 50-60 your risk quadruples. From 60-70 your risk quintuples. Between 50 and 70 is the most dangerous time to get breast cancer. To decrease mammograms to every two years is a death wish for women in this age demographic. The # 1 cause of breast cancer is diet, the 2nd cause environmental effects and the LAST is hereditary. I have seen as young as 19 years old with double mastectomy to 90 year olds with Breast cancer. Cancer doesn’t care what age you are or what sex you are.

Breast cancer strikes 211,000 U.S. women each year and kills more than 40,000, making it the leading cause of cancer and second-biggest cancer killer (after lung cancer) among women. But I guess if this farce of a task force says women don’t need it…we should all just relax, right?

Now, to get personal. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when screening found a lump on her breast when she was 70 years old. Her mother was found to have breast cancer when she was 75 years old and had a mastectomy. In my mother’s case, she was able to have a lumpectomy because it was found early enough. After the removal of a couple of her lymph nodes, she was given radiation and chemotherapy. Had my mother not had that mammogram then, she would be dead today. I can’t even imagine what my life would be without her in it. Coincidently, just last week I brought her in for her annual mammogram and she will be seen by her Oncologist next week to go over the results. Since her surgery, she has been on medication that has been shown to help keep women from recurring cancer. This medication is very expensive and it’s no surprise to me that since this health care bill has been going through Congress and now the Senate, there are grumblings from Medicare that they don’t want to pay for this pill anymore. This was never an issue until our government has been pushing this new health care bill.

This so-called government task force is making this recommendation and cherry picking data for one reason only…to help keep costs down for this ridiculous health care bill that’s in the Senate and that Obama is determined to sign. The bill in Congress has already shown that they want to cut Medicare spending and what better way to do that than to not pay for the costs of breast cancer screening for women over the age of 70?

* Report: Bill would reduce senior care – Medicare cuts approved by House may affect access to providers. WP.

A plan to slash more than $500 billion from future Medicare spending — one of the biggest sources of funding for President Obama’s proposed overhaul of the nation’s health-care system — would sharply reduce benefits for some senior citizens and could jeopardize access to care for millions of others, according to a government evaluation released Saturday.

The report offers the clearest and most authoritative assessment to date of the effect that Democratic health reform proposals would have on Medicare and Medicaid, the nation’s largest public health programs.

The American College of Radiology, representing professionals who perform mammograms, addressed the fears of those who see the new health care reform as limiting tests and procedures to stem rising health care costs. In an article in the Chicago Tribune this morning, Dr. Carol Lee, chairwoman of the American College of Radiology’s Breast Imaging Commission said; “I just don’t understand what would make the (task force) change their recommendations when there really is no significant change in the data. This has to be about costs.”

Breast cancer can’t be ignored or wished away by a bunch of government bureaucrats. But of course, they can get away with this as long as we stay silent. This isn’t just a women’s issue. Guys, if you have a wife that you dearly love, do you want to take the chance on her missing a diagnosis for breast cancer because your health insurance will decide to only pay for tests on the recommendation of this government task force? Would you want your teen or adult daughter to succumb to breast cancer because she was told that self-examination is useless?

For more information on the Congressional Health Care bill, Quipster had a great post up yesterday (which is where I found the information on the proposed Medicare and Medicaid cuts).

Below is another great article written on this issue…

Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Radiology Director Responds to New Mammography Screening Recommendations

“Women need a clear message: early detection offers a woman the best chance for a cure, and mammography is essential for early detection of breast cancer. The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance continues to support annual screening mammograms for women beginning at age 40 as does the American Cancer Society. In fact, according to the ACS, 17 percent of breast cancer deaths in 2006 were among women who were diagnosed between ages 40 and 49.

“We know that digital mammography significantly improves the detection of cancer in young women and in women with dense breast tissue. These well-documented facts are not included in the analyses that led to the change in recommendations. It is important that women receive their mammograms at centers with the ability to provide high quality exams and that all women understand the importance of mammography for the early detection of breast cancer.”

“Failing to identify those women in their 40s with cancer and having them wait until they are screened at age 50 is a disservice. By then breast cancer can be advanced and more difficult to treat.”

UPDATE I: READ HOTAIR WHICH HAS AN EXCELLENT POST WHICH ALSO LISTS THE NAMES AND SPECIALTY OF THOSE ON THE TASK FORCE. THEY NOTE: “Not a single Oncologist in the group, not one!

UPDATE II: Per blogger SFIndie…. Please let your voices be heard! “The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) is part of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Agency For Healthcare Research And Quality (check their website). This is the “for more information, contact” person. I’ll be contacting her and letting her know exactly how I feel:”

THE END IS NEAR…AGAIN

Posted in 2012, END OF THE WORLD on November 16, 2009 by Nunly

homer-says-the-end-is-near

Ok….I’ve seen more than enough end of days stuff on TV and the Internet, most of it concerning the movie “2012″.  Personally,  I don’t understand what it is about disaster movies that get so much play. My gosh, all you have to do is turn on the TV and flick through the guide and there is one disaster after another (including Jon and Kate). Just in the last week, I’ve seen documentaries about 2012, Nostradamus, sci-fi movies about giant ice twisters, and meteors slamming into the earth. What ever happened to the good ol’ days when we were attacked by giant bugs,  giant gorilla’s , or Godzilla? Now it’s all about weather, space debris, earthquakes and volcanoes. It sounds like  the movie, “2012″ brings them altogether at the same time.

Now, many people will say that it’s no big deal, it’s just a movie, but ya know what? There are people out there who take this stuff seriously. Remember the Y2K  scare  a few years back? I saw people at Sam’s Club stocking up on bottled water, generators, and canned food. I’ll bet they’re still eating that canned spam they bought. Of course, those are the idiots who watched this   garbage….

Yup…all is hopeless. No lights, no electricity, planes are going to collide in mid-air…not just because the pilots are on their laptops or drunk, either. It’s the end of the world. Of course, there is the obligatory picture of the religious icons being destroyed, just like the movie “2012″.

Of course, there is the element of people who think that they can escape the end of the world…they are the survivalists. Be afraid! Be very afraid…but be prepared.  They’re kind of like boy scouts on steroids.   Run to the store!  Get your water!   Buy cases of spam and Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup! Get your guns and ammo ready!!!

So what happens when a humongous meteorite lands on those guys in the mountains that are camping out, eating squirrels, blogging, and cleaning and polishing their guns?

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve met with a few Catholic survivalists out there, too. I guess the whole gospel thing about no one knowing the day or the hour didn’t sink in because they’re ready for that “Three Days of Darkness” they keep trying to sell to anyone who will listen. The Church doesn’t condone this stuff as far as I know, but it doesn’t seem to detour those who believe in it. They may not have cases of spam and water stocked up in their basement, but their homes are filled with blessed candles. According to this crowd, “Three-quarters of the human race will be exterminated, – more men than women.” Hmmm….that might not be so bad. ;-)

And there are also the “Left Behind” crowd.

It seems that all the Catholics are going to be left behind because we’re the “Whores of Babylon”. Man, if I had a nickle for every time someone yelled that to me when I changed lanes without using my signal. ;-)

Ok, what I’m getting at in this post is this….if ya wanna spend your weekend going to movies or watching documentaries on TV about how we’re all gonna die, most likely in 2012, don’t waste your time. There are worst ways to go, and it could happen this Thanksgiving. Just keep telling yourself, “There’s no such thing as an evil turkey…There’s no such thing as an evil turkey”. (Following video has some nasty language….just so ya know).

DANCING TO THE BEAT OF A DIFFERENT DRUMMER

Posted in Uncategorized on November 15, 2009 by Nunly

I often hear complaints from Catholics about the type of music played or sung during Mass. Many don’t like guitar Masses or other instruments being used, they feel that all Catholic Church music should be the same traditional hymns they remember when they were young. Not me, though! I think Liturgical music, in any form, is pleasing to God. How can you not smile when watching this video and seeing the love on their faces or hearing it in their voices? Mass should be a celebration…and as we all know, everyone dances to the beat of a different drummer. So enjoy! Praise God in your own voice!

Have a great Sunday :-)
